Sažetak
In this paper we describe an outbreak of abortions in sheep in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a result of vaccination of sheep against Brucella melitensis. In the period between 2005 and 2009 at the Department of Pathology at the Veterinary Faculty Sarajevo total of 483 sheep carcasses positive on brucellosis were examined. Samples of supramammary, iliac, scapular, submandibular and portal lymph nodes, liver and uterus were collected from each animal. Aborted fetuses and placentas were also subjected to necropsy and histopathology. Brucella were isolated from 117/483 (24, 2 %) animals. In all 117 isolates, Brucella melitensis biovar 3 was identified by routine bacteriology. Brucella melitensis vaccine strain Rev. 1 was identified by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) method in the liver samples from three aborted fetuses. Histopathology revealed necrotic placentitis and vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes in aborted fetuses. In conclusion, ovine brucellosis still represents serious problem in sheep production in sheep in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
