Sažetak
Chlamydiosis is a zoonosis caused by intracellular bacteria Chlamydophila psittaci which represents a significant problem in veterinary and humane medicine all over the world. More the 467 different bird species can be carriers of the pathogen. This zoonosis is very important in parrots and pigeons, but it still is an important disease in the intensive and especial free range breeding of turkey, geese, ducks and chickens. The unique biphasic lifestyle includes parasitic intracellular and infective extracellular phase, renders the respective diseases difficult to control. In the Republic of Croatia, prevention and the illness control is carried out according to the law provisions (mandatory quarantine, intrastate movement of infected birds, e.i.). The national laboratory for the diagnosis of Chlamydia (CHLAMLab) was established in 2006 and in 2011 received accreditation. During the years samples have been collected from various species of wild, pet birds and domesticated fowl. A variety of assays and techniques that directly detect antigen in tissue and swab samples from birds are available but we suggest using a real-time PCR method as a standard. I our laboratory the TaqMan 5' nuclease PCR method was used described by Ehricht et al. (2006), based on detection of 23 rRNA gen and reaction was carried out in Mx3005P cycler (Stratagene, USA). Positive samples have been detected from a wide range of avian species and the estimate of infection varies from 2.2% to 28.0 %. Depending on the flock size and housing conditions, positive birds were treated therapeutically with different antimicrobial agents (tetracycline or enrofloxacine) and bio-security measures (quarantine, regular cleaning and disinfection) were performed in all positive cases. After the treatment, the birds were examined until negative results were obtained. Our results clearly point the need for urgent and certain diagnostics, as a postulate for protection of human health, especially the ones working with the birds. If the birds are showing any respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms, chlamydiosis should be tested. Not only the number of the birds positive for chlamydiosis but also the data on the people fallen ill with psittacosis showed that this infection is not only a problem of veterinary service, but also a public health service problem.
