Sažetak
Titanium and its alloys have become some of the most attractive implant materials due to their light weight, high biocorrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties, including a low modulus. Because of the mismatch of elastic modulus of the conventional titanium implant (100-120 GPa) and bone (10-30 GPa), the recent trend in research on titanium alloys for biomedical applications is to develop new β-type Ti-alloys with a lower modulus and better formability. In the present study, the structural, mechanical and electrochemical characteristics of a five ternary Ti-rich alloys with cobalt (5 and 10 at.%) as the β-phase improving element andn chromium (10-20 at.%) as a strengthener, were investigated. The button-like ingots were prepared by arc melting the mixture of pure elements on a water-cooled copper hearth in argon atmosphere. Their casting in the cylindrical samples was made using the same equipment. The XRD and SEM analysis indicated that the alloys with 5 at.% Co were single β-phase and those with 10 at.% Co consisted of the β-phase, Ti2Co intermetallic compound and the alpha-phase in traces. The average chemical composition of the β- and alpha- Ti substitutional solid solutions and those of the Ti2(Co, Cr) precipitate was established by EDX analysis. The hardness values of single β-phase alloys were lower and they increased from 359 to 423 HV with chromium content. The stress-compression curves for single β-phase alloys showed coexisting high strength (1620-1990 MPa) and large plasticity (64-79%), and low values of elastic modulus (47-72 GPa). All experimental alloys revealed high Epitt values (>1200 mV) and consequently an excellent corrosion resistance. With regards to the best combination of properties, two new β-type Ti-alloys Ti85Co5Cr10 and Ti80Co5Cr15 showed the potential for biomedical applications.
