Background and purpose: Polycelis felina is a freshwater planarian species with only one cell type - neoblasts - capable for mitosis. These cells are very importuned for the regeneration processes in planarians. It is known that many heavy metals ions affect regeneration and cell division. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of manganese on neoblasts division during the regeneration of planarian Polycelis felina. Material and methods: For the experiment 66 h old planarian regenerates were used. They were treated with solutions of manganese chloride in three different concentrations for 6 hours. Afterwards, the microscopic preparations of treated animals were made by use of conventional squash technique. Slides were stained in lacto-orcein and mounted in Euparal. Results: The data have shown that only two highest concentrations of manganese were lethal for treated animals, while all concentrations applied caused a statistically significant decrease of the mitotic disturbances (C-mitosis, vagrant chromosomes, multipolar anaphase) and chromosomal aberrations (sticky chromosomes and anaphase bridges) in planarian neoblasts were also observed. Conclusions: The present experiment showed that manganese, like many other metal ions, induce damages and aberrations in genetic material and affect physiological processes in planarian Polycelis felina. The data suggest that the most aberrations observed in planarian neoblasts after treatment were result of the mitotic spindle disturbances.
