Sažetak
This study investigates the effects of job redesign efforts in a sewing machine factory on job satisfaction, sickness absence, turnover, and quality of output. Two types of assembly lines were compared: “old” lines that include machine-paced, monotonous and highly specific work and “new” lines with wider variety of tasks, determination of work space, responsibility for quality control and improved job conditions. The biographical and work attitude dana were administered three times over a two year period to the sample of subjects who worked on different types of lines. The adapted version of Job Description Indeks was applied to give a measure of job satisfaction. Sickness absence, turnover, and dana on quality of output over a three year period were obtained from company records. The findings suggested that job redesign had some positive effects on work attitudes and behaviour. The work outcomes most strongly associated with job redesign are significantly higher job satisfaction (especially satisfaction with the work itself) , and lowe absenteeism due to sickness among the employees who worked on “new” lines. Turnover rate was also lower. However, this difference was not significant. The relationship between job redesign and quality of output proved to be more complex. Workers with redesigned jobs accounted for more errors but less products rejected as waste.
