Sažetak
The wooden polychrome sculpture depicting Virgin with Child, from the parish church in Betina (Croatia) is a work of local artisan(s) and of great importance to the local residents. They believe that this rustic sculpture, dated to the transition from 15th to 16th century period, possesses healing powers and as such it is highly worshiped. The sculpture contained three over-layers which were removed after detailed research and documentation. The original high quality layer has been presented. After removing the pedestal from the second restoration intervention (18th century), it has been revealed that the original pedestal had been severely damaged. Two cubic shaped cavities were discovered on the pedestal containing holes, the positions of which indicated that the crescent moon symbol was incorporated into the sculpture, consequently changing the sculpture’s iconography into Immaculate Conception. The presentation focuses on the process of selecting the adequate adhesives and their application in regards to wooden support damage type and microclimate conditions in which the object is kept. We are trying to clarify the following important issues: 1. Adhesives’ interoperability and compatibility 2. Ethics and decision for the use of certain adhesives and their application in conservation of the sculpture 3. Properties and application of ancient or traditional adhesives (“a new twist on the old”) 4. Adhesive removal 5. Innovative approach in adhesives’ application The presentation will report on an experimental investigation and evaluation of the adhesive combination for the joint, and the basic premise of the use of isolating barrier between the adherend and filling adhesives. The research was driven by the practical need for sculpture to be preserved and to provide substantiated scientific data on the matter. Larger damaged wood areas were filled by the use of balsa wood and adhesive consisting of: distilled water, hide glue, Mowiol 4-88 and glycerin. The experiments have revealed satisfying hide glue and polyvinyl-alcohol cohesion. The damaged parts of the wood were stabilized with a grouting material that had to be applied by syringe through existing holes. A mixture of micro-balloons, wood flour and Acematt® HK125 (fumed silica) exhibited the best working properties and had low shrinkage. Only a minimum amount of binding material (rabbit skin glue) has been used. The missing right section of the pedestal was reconstructed from the larch wood (same species of which the rest of the sculpture is made), processed, carved and finally glued. For the sake of static stability, epoxy glue was used combined with the larch wood flour and micro-balloons. In this particular case we applied an isolating barrier consisting of hide glue, with intention of preventing an epoxy glue penetration into the adherend. After experimenting, an efficient ratio combination was found exhibiting satisfactory junction solidity.
