Sažetak
Quercus coccifera (Kermes Oak) is the most common species of the Mediterranean maquis, thriving in a wide variety of often contrasting environments. It is distributed from 44°32′ N on the island of Cres (east coast of North Adriatic, Croatia) to 31°00′ N in Negev (Israel) and from 9°30′ Ein Cascais (Portugal) to 37°00′ E on the Alaouite Mountains in Syria. It dominates low and high shrub formations, such as the garrigue in Southern France, “coscojares” in Spain, and “prinones” in continental Greece. In Croatia, Kermes Oak sites were found on the islands of Lošinj, Korčula and Mljet, and on the Pelješac peninsula and in the Konavle region (south of Dubrovnik). Croatian Government has protected this species on all localities from 1969. The aim of the study was to investigate structure of Q. coccifera stands on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea. In addition, chorology of the Q. coccifera in Croatia has been completed. Altogether, 60 phytocoenological relevés were collected in Croatia and Montenegro in the period from 1995 to 2010. On the island of Mljet, south Croatia, Kermes Oak is a part of the Erico arboreae-Arbutetum unedonis association (the Oleo sylvestris-Ceratonion siliquae alliance). The Erico arboreae-Arbutetum unedonis association is commonly developed as xerothermic macchia. Depending on the topographic conditions, this association may represent low and high shrub formation (garrigue). Taxa Erica manipuliflora, Cistus incanus ssp. creticus and C. salviifolius appeared within this association with high cover and frequency. From the ecological point of view and physionomically, the Erico arboreae-Arbutetum unedonis association is closely related to the Erico manipuliflorae-Cistetum cretici association (the Cisto-Ericion alliance) with whom it often borders. At all other sites on the eastern Adriatic coast and islands, Kermes Oak is a characteristic species of the Fraxino orni-Quercetum cocciferae association (the Quercion ilicis alliance). Two new subassociations have been described within the Fraxino orni-Quercetum cocciferae association during our study period. Floristics and ecology of the association were characterised and the relationships to similar syntaxa were discussed. For this purpose, a set of 250 phytocoenological relevés of the Quercetalia ilicis associations were subjected to numerical-classification analysis.
