Sažetak
The aim of this study was to determine the connection between fetal losses in cattle and exposure to Brucella abortus., Leptospira spp. and Coxiella burnetti. A total of 705 blood samples were collected from Central and Eastern Croatia regions during a five-year period (2005-2009). Samples were collected during regular disease monitoring determined by Decree on measures to protect animals from infectious and parasitic diseases and their financing which order the minister for the current year. The estimated prevalence was 4.96% (35) for Q-fever and 5.53% (39) for leptospirosis but without a single positive case of brucellosis. The presence of abortion and confirmed cases were processed using the ArcGIS software with the aim of geographically presenting the distribution of leptospirosis and Q-fever. The overall diagnostic rate was relatively low (10.49%). However, only blood samples were examined from aborted cows without further investigations of vaginal mucus, aborted foetus, placenta and cervical mucus tampons. Moreover other infectious agents like Neospora caninum, Trichomonas foetus, Toxoplasma gondii, Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter fetus, Salmonella spp., Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Chlamydophila spp., Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD), Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), Aspergillus fumigatus and Mucor spp., which were not investigated in this study, are very important in the pathogenesis of bovine abortions.
