Sažetak
Here we report on the genetic diversity of the extant and extinct British Chough populations using the hypervariable mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequence as a genetic marker. Our findings indicate that Choughs in Britain form a single matrilineage and that genetic differentiation of western European red-billed Chough populations may be very low. The current lack of mtDNA variation in British Choughs could either be a consequence of a presumed bottleneck during the last glaciation followed by recent human-induced bottlenecks, or it could be due to a combination of limited dispersal and classical random genetic sampling from the ancestral glacial refugium. With the current knowledge, managing the population as a single unit seems genetically appropriate.
