Sažetak
Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world and the fourth most common risk factor for disease worldwide. In Croatia the smoking prevalence in adults was from 1999 to 2001 30, 3%. The average number of years lost per death from smoking was 19 for people in middle age, and 15 for all ages. The 2003 Croatian Adult Health Survey targets persons aged 18 years or older. The sample selected from the 2001 Census of households. The sample of dwellings (households) was selected under a multistage stratified cluster design. In this article we compare addictive smokers and non-smokers in the Eastern region and age between 18 and 29. The data was analysed by descriptive analysis and chi square test. We found that 40, 02% of addictive smokers and 22, 45% of non smokers have monthly household income lower than 266 €. The unemployed are twice as more addictive smokers than non smokers. Addictive smokers are 2, 5 times more overweight than non smokers. 1/4 of addictive smokers drink heavy at least once a week, 5, 7 times more than non smokers. Addictive smokers have three times lower education than non smokers. We found that addictive smokers have elevated blood cholesterol (9, 86%), heart attack (3, 20%), rheumatic arthritis (10, 30%) and gastritis or ulcus (17, 30%). Non-smokers did not report these conditions. In all observing categories we found a significant statistic difference (on level p<0, 005 to p<0, 05). In the East region the biggest share of addictive smokers are between 18 and 29. That group of population also has other risk factors of disease, low education, low monthly household income, drinking habits, obesity, elevated blood cholesterol and heart disease. We should put more effort into controlling the epidemic by means of policies and programmes that have shown results in other countries.
