Sažetak
AIM: Not long ago, medical personnel believed that newborns do not feel pain. New studies revealed that nociceptors, pathways and pain somatosensory centers are developed since 30th week of gestation. Pain habituation can alter brain development and has unwanted long term effects. Neonatal pain relief is manageable with prevention, environment, behavior or pharmacological methods. Non pharmacologic methods are favorable when ever possible. We tested orally administered glucose in lessening the pain to newborns. METHODS: At 40 newborns 75 venepunctions were performed. There were 16 males and 25 females, of which 15 preterm and 25 term with median weight 2700g, median gestational age 38 weeks and various diagnoses. Venepunctions were performed during the diagnostics or therapy procedure with needle size No. 1. At 34 venepunctions newborns got orally 12% glucose 2-5 min before procedure, and at 41 got the placebo. Reaction to pain casused by venepunctions was measured using Neonatal Infant Pain Scale. The strongest pain reaction was scored 7 and score 0 represented non annoyance. The evaluator did not know weather the newborn got glucose or the placebo. RESULTS: average score of newborns that did not get oral glucose was 4, 6 and those that got oral glucose had 2, 4. The difference was statistically significant (t=4, 85 and p<0, 05). CONCLUSION: Orally given glucose is effective and inexpensive non pharmacological method for reducing responses to painful stimuli in newborns. Pain prevention and/or relief are important and human step in overall medical care and should be a condition and demonstration of good clinical practice.
