Sažetak
A modern way of life, or lack of time and lack of nutrients in foods leads to the use of vitamins and minerals 'from the bottle'. The industry of dietary supplements increased worldwide as they have found their place in the field of preventive nutrition, providing consumers the ability to take care of their health. However, there is no strict quality regulation as for food additives and drugs. In this work we investigated the prevalence and concentrations of toxic elements in a variety of dietary supplements with an emphasis on mineral-based products (mostly Ca based). Using ICP-MS, we have analyzed As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Ag, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sn, and V. The collected dietary supplement samples were from Croatian market (domestic production or imported from other countries). Microwave digested samples were diluted to contain <0.2% total dissolved solids and measured with Ge, Rh, In, and Ir as internal standards. Lu and Sc could not be used due to their presence in some of the samples of natural origin (zeolites and dolomites). Accuracy of the analysis was checked by using reference materials with similar matrice (NIST 3280 Multivitamin/ Multielement tablets, IAEA H5 Animal bone ; NIST 1567a Wheat flour, BCR 189 Wholemeal flour, BCR 063R Milk powder). Based on the results, we estimated daily intake of measured toxic metals, and compared the amount present in tested mineral supplements with the Tolerable Daily Intakes, as recommended by the EFSA, WHO and American Pharmacopoeia.
