Sažetak
The enrichment of the sea surface microlayer (SSM) in organic matter affects physical features of the air-sea interface thus influencing the air-sea fluxes. Hence, it is of considerable interest to get insight into morphology, structural changes and build-up mechanisms of the natural SSM. Different methods are used for the Chemical and physical characterizations, including nonspecific electrochemical techniques for the surface active substances (SAS) determination and characterization, Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) for the molecular formulas determination. Also specific approach is lipid class determination by Thin layer chromatography. For the physical characterization we are using optical characterization, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) that is used to study organization of surface structures and monolayer technique. It is classical method which includes measurements of the p-A isotherms and is used for determination of physical states (as gass, liquid expanded and condensed and solid phase as well as film collapse) and different phase transitions of natural microlayers as well as the elastic properties of original microlayers throughout determination of the compressibility and surface compression modulus.
