Common ivy (Hedera helix, L.) is climbing evergreen woody plant found on trees, walls and ground. The leaves are polymorphic, leathery, and different in shape-lanceolate, ovate, cordate, three and five lobed. Natively from Europe, western Asia and northern Africa, it has spread to other parts of Asia, as well as Americas. The medicinally important parts are leaves which are used in traditional medicine against bronchitis, cough, arthritis, rheumatism, aches, dysentery, headache, earache, and locally against lice, scabies and sunburns. Of numerous constituents found in ivy leaves, the saponins and triterpene glycosides are of greatest pharmacological significance. Main saponins in ivy are hederacoside C and α-hederin. In this work our objective was comparison of TLC and HPLC-DAD method of analysis for hederasaponins in syrups against cough on the basis of ivy leaves extracts. We also compared the content of active substances in OTC registered syrup to those marketed as dietary supplements. HPLC analysis was performed on Agilent 1100 Instrument using method described by Demirci et al. For the TLC analysis CAMAG Linomat 5, Scanner 3 and Reprostar 3 system was used using the method from the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur. 6th Ed.). Identification and quantification, for both TLC and HPLC methods, were based on the comparison with standards and UV-VIS spectra. higher in the registered medicinal product comparing to the dietary supplement products. Thus, it can be concluded that registration of OTC product ensures its quality. Comparing HPLC-DAD and TLC analysis, advantage should be given to TLC. Hederasaponins have maximum of absorption at λ<205 nm, which makes the detection more difficult using DAD. TLC provides visual information (color of the band), as well as spectra in situ, and present technique that is readily available.
