Sažetak
The security challenges currently faced by Europe are definitely new. Nontraditional threats, such as ethnic nationalism, terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and organized crime, require a different approach to European security. The building and strengthening of security organizations is a way to deal with these common security challenges. In this context that NATO enlargement offers an opportunity of greater security against new—yet common—threats. It should make Europe and the US safer by reducing the possibility of conflict. NATO expansion will expand the area of Europe where wars do not happen. NATO enlargement should be in the strategic security interest of almost all the Alliance's members and of vital interest to those countries of Central and Eastern Europe which have historically been areas of instability and conflict. Croatia is an important source of stability at the edge of southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
