Sažetak
Solidarity, as a moral idea, displays itself through the duty of intercession for the other, admitting, accordingly, the obligation to respect the dignity of every person. The obligation, understood in such a manner, assumes the acceptance of the other as a free and equal individual. With the development of modern western liberal de- mocracy, in comparison with liberty and equality, the idea of solidarity has been put aside. In John Rawls’s theory of justice as fairness, liberty, equality and difference principle are the basic elements for establishing justice in a democratic order. The difference principle in his theory provides an interpretation of the principle of soli- darity as a political concept. Through the idea of a welfare state and social order, Europe has been upholding the principle of solidarity. If the European Union up- holds that principle today, can it resist the pressure of the global market? Can the EU through its solidaristic culture be a leader and a role model for ensuring justice in every democratic society?
