Sažetak
Metal strings which are coming into direct and prolonged contact with human skin are very important part of many musical instruments. Since metal ions may provoke skin allergic reactions, chemical composition and microstructure of metal strings directly influences human health. In this chapter, monitoring of dissolution of electric guitar strings (E6, A5, D4, g3, h2 and e1) in artificial sweat solution were investigated. Prior to performing these experiments it was very important to carry out the detailed characterization of investigated strings. In order to characterize the electric guitar strings different analytical techniques was used: inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), optical microscopy (OM) and a scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive X-Ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS). Obtained results indicate that electric guitar strings (E6, A5 and D4) consist of two separate parts: Sn-plated steel core wire which is hexagonal in cross section and Ni-plated steel wrap which is round in cross section. Furthermore, the electric guitar strings (g3, h2 and e1) consist of only one wire: Sn-plated steel core wire which is round in cross section. Dissolution of electric guitar strings (E6, A5, D4, g3, h2 and e1) in artificial sweat solution was studied as a function of immersion time at the temperature of 37 °C in compliance to the EN 1811:1999 standard test procedure. From the amounts of Ni2+, Mn2+, Si4+, Sn2+ and Fe3+ ions eluted in artificial sweat solution, a degree of dissolution i for each component was calculated according to the equation i = A/B, where A and B are respectively the amounts of elements eluted in artificial sweat solution and the amounts of elements in the untreated material. The monitoring of the amount of metal ions eluted in artificial sweat solution was carried out by means of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). As testing samples, strings for electric guitar were chosen due to a content of nickel, the mostly known skin allergen. The results have proven that the samples investigated should not present a thread to human health, since the threshold of 0.5 g Ni2+/ cm2 per week has not been over passed.
