Sažetak
Di(5-cyclopentadienyl)iron(II), commonly known as ferrocene, has been a center of prolific research since its discovery. There are ample literature proceedings demonstrating that ferrocene has become a versatile linkage between biochemistry and organometallic chemistry, thus opening a new and prosperous branch of chemistry: bioorganometallic chemistry. This chapter describes the part of bioorganometallic chemistry which involves amino acids and peptides directly linked to the ferrocene subunit. Ferrocene bound β-lactams, derivatives that introduce iron in the sphere of antibiotic development, and as well represent a synthon for the already mentioned amino acids and peptides, are also covered in this chapter. A comprehensive survey of synthetic methods for the preparation of ferrocene amino acids and peptides is given with an accent on the procedures developed in the last ten years. Furthermore, the physical, chemical, and medicinal properties of these compounds are thoroughly described, demonstrating their applicability as biomarkers for various enzymes and as potential cytotoxic, antibiotic, antimalarial and anticancer agents. In addition, the studies of modified biogenic ferrocene containing peptides combined with the studies of hydrogen bonding in simple ferrocene peptides are described. These studies give relevant information on the biological role and functioning of natural occuring peptides, especially in the area of substrate-receptor interactions. The electrochemical properties of ferrocene amino acids and peptides present a very important aspect of research and are illustrated through the findings accumulated in the field of redox chemistry of ferrocene and ferrocene derivatives. This research provides a route to their application in electrochemical sensor devices.
