Sažetak
In terms of increased speed and density of traffic, the risk of traffic accidents increases, and in this respect the losses in the economy. Latest statistics on traffic accidents in the European Union suggest the need for increased scientific research and evaluation of previous activities in this area. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) can significantly improve national traffic safety. According to estimates, ITS effects on traffic safety range up to 40%. ITS devices and equipment can prevent the occurrence of an accident or reduce its consequences, and with help of ITS it is possible to make a better and safer decision. ITS and associated technologies are not a substitute for the human brain and its ability of processing complex information, decision-making and taking appropriate actions, but may be a good supplement in terms of reducing the space for mistakes and lowered attention of traffic participants. Developing countries, such as Croatia, should monitor the development of ITS technologies in the world. By doing that, they have a certain advantage because they do not have to spend money on research. The paper describes practical examples of ITS contributions to road safety, primarily speed limits (the main cause of traffic accidents in Croatia), keeping the distance between vehicles to prevent rear-end collision, lane keeping system, etc. Also some possibilities of ITS in the increase of pedestrian traffic safety are shown. ITS potential is not used completely because of the technological, organizational, institutional, financial and other problems.
