Sažetak
The paper discusses the effects of block board structure on surface quality of solid wood table tops. Researched oak wood veneered block boards were lacquered with semi transparent waterborne coatings. Block boards with middle layer made of conifers (fir, spruce) and constructive ceiba veneer lining were researched. As reference, block boards with middle layer made of conifers (fir, spruce) and constructive beech veneer lining were used. Discoloration, manifested by appearance of bright lines oriented in the direction of middle layer slats on ceiba veneered boards was noticed. In order to eliminate discolorations, researched block boards were veneered with beech and oak veneers in different combinations, using urea-formaldehyde (UF) and polyvinyl-acetate (PVAc) resins. Based on research results it was found that quality requirements can be met only by applying block boards made with middle layer from sharp-edged, flat, smooth, uniform thick slats dried to 7±1 % water content with annual rings oriented perpendicular to the constructive (blind) veneer that lines the middle layer. Slats must be glued together so that each slat annual rings has a deflection in the opposite direction with thickness of each outer constructive veneer not less then 1/10 of block board nominal thickness. For outer layers, constructive veneers must be from wood species with high mechanical and favourable technological properties such as beech. Otherwise, due to uneven middle layer shrinkage, greater or lesser degree of surface waviness and discoloration cannot be avoided.
