Sažetak
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) as a member of the family Arteriviridae, genus Arterivirus is characterised by reproductive failure in sows, as well as respiratory disease distress in piglets. PRRSV occurs almost worl-wide and is considered one of the most economically significant disease of the swine industry. Two major antigenic types of the virus exist, the European and American type.In 2009 a total of 304 sera samples were collected during routine diagnostic from three commercial pig farms located in eastern part of Croatia. Blood sera were taken from 146 breeding animals and 158 finishing pigs. All sera were examined by the commercially ELISA test IDEXX HerdChek PRRS 2XR which is highly specific for early antibody detection. Antibodies against PRRSV were detected in 95 (30.26%) sera of the tested animals. Prevalence varies from 23.97 % in breeding animals to 37.97% in finishing pigs. Carcasses of 29 fattening pigs and aborted fetuses from the examined farms where PRRSV was serologically detected, were delivered to the Croatian Veterinary Institute in Department for Pathology for immunohistochemistry (IHC) detection of the virus. IHC was used as a confirmatory test that targets European and American strain of PRRS virus. Immunohistochemical examination of 14 lung tissue samples in piglets and fatteners determined the respiratory form of PRRS and in 15 examined thymus samples of aborted fetuses reproduction form of PRRS was determined. By using the specific antibodies for European and American strain IHC confirmed that European strain of PRRS virus is a causative agent of disease in Croatia.
