Sažetak
The aim of this research was to assess the role of obesity in development of insulin resistance and to determine cardiovascular risk among obese and non-obese women with the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Study examined the relationship between obesity, hyperinsulinemia and cardiovascular risks among PCOS women and their healthy controls. The study was conducted at tertiary University Hospital Centre, department of Gynecology and Obstetris. the total of 50 women, in an age of 25-35 years with PCOS, defined according to the Rotterdam criteria, n 5 randomly assigned healthy controls. Results were obtained from clinical and anthropomorphic measurements as well as laboratorydeterminations of insulin and lipid levels. In obese women with PCOs hyperinsulinemia was more frequent as well as cardiovascular risks when compared with non-obese women with PCOS, who in turn had more risk than the control women. The lipid profile of PCOS women showed changes expcted to correlate with insulin resistance such as high triglyceride and low HDL cholesterol levels but also higher LDL cholesterol levels. Our data indicate tahat elevated insulin resitance and changes in serum lipid profile, known as possible risk factors for cardovascular disorder, play important roles in both, obese and non-obese patients with PCOS. Obesity itself is an important independent risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease and adult diabetes.
