Sažetak
Wood welding enables joining of wood elements without the use of adhesives or any other bonding agents, by using heat that appears on contact surfaces due to friction. Melting of the surface layers of wood in contact occurs during the welding process, thus creating a melt, which, after turning solid, becomes a strong joint which is as firm as a glued joint. Important factors in dowel welding process, aside from the size of the clearance, are wood moisture, duration of welding, wood type, impact of welding depth, rotation frequency and some less important factors. This paper describes the previous insights into wood welding, and own results of research conducted at the Faculty of Forestry of the University in Zagreb. Impact of the fit size (tightness) on the strength of a dowel that was rotationally welded perpendicular to the direction of wood fibres was investigated. The research has shown that the rotationally welded dowel achieved the greatest strength when tightness was 2 to 2.5 mm. If tightness is above or less than the mentioned, the embedded force or strength of the joint is reduced.
