Sažetak
Premda je "De institutione bene vivendi per exempla sanctorum" uvelike temeljio na primjerima iz života svetaca, Marulić je u svom prvom bestselleru izrekao stavove i o filozofima. Štoviše, posvetio im je jedno cijelo poglavlje. Filozofiju je spomenuo tek u posveti Jerolimu Ćipiku: "Oni pak koji su se starali da se oslone radije na Božje negoli ljudske nauke i da slijede i prigrle filozofiju ne zemaljsku, već onu što je sašla s neba, uzašli su na nebo odakle je ona potekla." Time je, osim razlikovanja filozofije od teologije, naglasio da ostvarenje blaženstva pripada samo kršćanima. Kakav će biti njegov odnos prema filozofima u "Instituciji" Marulić nam je najavio također u posveti. Nakon što je istaknuo da su o putu prema blaženstvu naučavali i filozofi, zaključio je da oni nisu spoznali put koji je Bog pokazao ljudima. Sljedbenicima Sokrata, Pitagore, Platona i ostalih učitelja ljudske mudrosti zato je poručio da se priklanjaju onima koji su u zabludi i daleko od istinske mudrosti. U posveti "Institucije" izlaganje o filozofima zaključio je rečenicom: "Neka se šuti o oštroumnosti filozofā!" (taceatur philosophorum acumen!). U petnaestom poglavlju šeste knjige "Institucije", onom kojega je naslovio "O slavi blaženih" ("De beatorum gloria"), Marulić se odlučio na još jedan prigovor filozofima. Ustvrdio je da blaženi mogu biti samo oni koji vjeruju u Boga te žive sveto i pobožno. Pritom je sposobnosti vjernikā pretpostavio sposobnostima filozofā: "što nikada ne bi bio kadar istražiti prvosvećenik poganske filozofije Platon ni od njega još oštroumniji Aristotel, to će i najmanji među građanima nebeske domovine shvatiti, razumjeti, pojmiti i usvojiti." U desetom poglavlju druge knjige "Institucije" Marulić se sukobio s filozofima (congredi cum philosophis). Poglavlje je naslovio "O vjeri u Krista – protiv filozofā" ("De fide Christi contra philosophos"), a filozofima se obratio zato jer je želio da i oni usvoje nauk svetoga Pavla iz Prve poslanice Korinćanima: Božja je ludost mudrija od ljudi i Božja slabost jača od ljudi. Premda je Nikola Stanković u članku "Moć i nemoć filozofa u Instituciji Marka Marulića" (2006) iznio tvrdnju da Marulićev iskaz "contra philosophos" ne znači "protiv" nego "ususret" filozofima, u poglavlju "contra philosophos" Marulić je filozofima s pomoću četiriju primjera odaslao ove poruke: 1. Blaženstvo mogu ostvariti samo kršćani ; 2. Nauk filozofā nije siguran ni istinit ; 3. Mudrost i znanje filozofā ne mogu se po snazi svjedočanstva mjeriti sa svetim životom kršćanā ; 4. Spoznaja istine pripada samo kršćanima.

Although based on the examples from the life of saints, "De institutione bene vivendi per exempla sanctorum", Marulić’s first besteseller, contains also his views of philosophers. Moreover, he dedicated a whole chapter to them. Philosophy, however, he merely mentions in his dedication to Jerolim Ćipiko: "Yet those whocared for relying on divine rather than human doctrines and following and embracing philosophy not worldly but that which descended from heaven, have risen to heaven whence it had come." Thus, besides distinguishing philosophy from theology, he emphasises that achievement of blessedness belongs to Christians only. Marulić’s attitude towards philosophers in "De institutione" is also anticipated in the dedication. Having established that philosophers, too, taught on the pursuit of blessedness, Marulić concludes that they have not found the way which God has shown to men. That is why he advised the followers of Socrates, Pythagoras, Plato and other teachers of human wisdom to side with those who are misguided and far from true wisdom. In the dedication of "De institutione" he concluded his elaboration of philosophers with the following sentence: "Let there be silence on the acuteness of philosophers!" (taceatur philosophorum acumen!). In the fifteenth chapter of book six of "De institutione", entitled "On the glory of the blessed" ("De beatorum Gloria"), philosophers are again the subject of Marulić’s criticism. He states that the blessed can only be those who believe in God and whose life is that of piety and sanctity. Thus he gives precendence to the abilities of believers over those of philosophers: "a thing unpursuable either by the pontifex of the pagan philosophy Plato or wiser than him Aristotle will easily be grasped, understood, held and adopted by the smallest amongst the citizens of the divine homeland." In the tenth chapter of book two of "De institutione" Marulić is on hostile terms with philosophers (congredi cum philosophis). He entitled the chapter "On the faith in Christ – against philosophers" ("De fide Christi contra philosophos") with an aim to address philosophers so that they, too, adopt the teaching of St Paul from the First Epistle to the Corinthians: "The foolishness of God is wiser than men and the weakness of God is stronger than men." Although in his article "Moć i nemoć filozofa u Instituciji Marka Marulića [Strenght and weakness of philosophers in Marko Marulić’s De institutione]" (2006) Nikola Stanković argues that Marulić’s statement "contra philosophos" does not imply "against" but "towards" philosophers, in the chapter "contra philosophos" Marulić used four examples to convey these messages to philosophers: 1. Blessedness can be achieved by Christians only ; 2. The doctrine of philosophers is neither safe nor true ; 3. Wisdom and knowledge of philosophers cannot by the power of testimony measure with the holy life of the Christians ; 4. The knowledge of truth belongs to the Christians only.
