Sažetak
Long time data series from routine monitoring show that the marine Diatom Skeletonema sp. regularly dominates the phytoplankton in different areas of the northern Adriatic Sea. This made it very interesting to take a closer look at this species. From winter water samples clonal cultures of Skeletonema sp. were established and afterwards we retrieved partial sequences of the large subunit (LSU) of the ribosomal rRNA. Those sequences together with electron microscopical examinations of the cultures allowed the species determination. Our results indicate that the winter phytoplankton is dominated by the species Skeletonema marinoi.
