Sažetak
Tunnel ''St. Ilija'' is on the road that connects the Makarska Riviera and a new highway through the mountain range Biokovo (Figure 1). With a length of 4250 m, it is currently fourth road tunnel in Croatia, but also the tunnel with greatest overburden of 1300 m. According to the available information this is a road tunnel with the biggest limestone overburden in Europe, and as such it represented a real challenge for all who participated in its construction. This article describes the geodetic works that are undertaken in order to control breakthrough of the tunnel ''St. Ilija''. Activities are given in chronological order, from the preparation activities, control of external micronetworks using - GPS static methods, their connecting with precision traverse and underground geodetic control to the very breakthrough. Used instruments and software are showed, and appropriate methods of measurement are explained. The paper will also be speaking about the problems that can happen in the tunnel breakthrough with such high overburden, particularly the effect of lateral refraction.
