Sažetak
Concerning the quality of drinking water and health issues, the most emphasis has been placed on excessive amounts of various compounds. The scope of the present study was the evaluation of drinking water quality, based on major inorganic anions and cations content. Analysis of these compounds in drinking water from Brčko (B), Županja (Ž), Čepin (Č) and Osijek (O) were conducted between March and May 2004. Samples were collected in three 1-L bottles from frequently used taps. The analysis was carried out on a Dionex DX 600 (Sunnyvale, USA) using chromatographic methods ISO 10304-1 for anions and ISO 14911 for cations. The results clearly showed that the investigated drinking waters were very different in character and displayed a wide range of parameter values. The ranges of values for anions were: 0.076–0.377 mg/L for fluoride, 5.22–59.18 mg/L for chloride, 0.160–1.858 mg/L for nitrates (expressed as N) and 0.676–8.598 mg/L for sulphates. The classification of drinking water based on the SO4/Cl ratio showed that analyzed waters from Posavina belonged to the rain water while samples from Podravina could be describe as chloride water. Furthermore, significantly higher values of bromide (0.233 mg/L), ammonium (0.903 mg/L) and phosphates (0.330 mg/L) were detected specifically in samples from Ž, while PO4 content in the investigated waters from Č were relatively high (0.162–0.193 mg/L). The content of Li, K, Na, Ca and Mg in the analyzed samples was in the range from (in mg/L): 0.029–0.037, 0.808–1.933, 49.00–135.59, 37.53–85.62 and 16.14–32.73, respectively. The classification of water is most frequently determined according to the total hardness (Ca+Mg), expressed as mg/L CaCO3. In our study all examined water samples belonged to moderately hard water (Ž: 166.03 mg/L), quite hard water (O: 291.10 mg/L and Č: 301.10 mg/L), and hard water (B: 345.23 mg/L). According to the results of this study, the investigated drinking waters had the major anions and cations content below the maximum allowed values, except for the concentrations of ammonium in samples from Županja and phosphates content in analyzed water from Čepin and Županja.
