Sažetak
Hydrotherapy in veterinary patients is primarily used to build up their muscle strength and improve mobility after surgery or injury. However, its use can lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases, which can occur if the water disinfection was not applied or was inadequate. The aim of the study was to determine the dose and frequency of disinfectant adding into the water in order to achieve recommended concentration of free chlorine residual of 0.3-0.6 mg/L. The hygienic water quality of therapy basin (Water walker®, KEIPER GmbH & CoKG), with capacity of 1.4 m3, was investigated. Organoleptic, physicochemical and bacteriologic parameters of water were analyzed immediately before and after hydrotherapy. Sodium dichloroisocyanurate dihydrate was used as disinfectant. The obtained results showed that the initial, healthy safe, water quality became deteriorated after therapies as well as after pumping through the filter. Parameters such as turbidity, ammonia, organic matter concentration and the number of aerobic mesophilic bacteria increased, and at the same time the free chlorine residual concentration decreased on an average of 0.02-0.05 mg/L. The study demonstrated the importance of daily monitoring of the free chlorine residual concentration as well as significance of determination of the proper disinfectant dose necessary to achieve the recommended values.
