Sažetak
Kierkegaard said that boredom is the root of all evil. Bertrand Russell supports that claim posing boredom as a vital problem for the moralist, since, in his words, at least half the sins of mankind are caused by the fear of it. That existentially disturbing state (Hellesnes) is today spread more than ever. This is a thought supported by numerous “social placebos” (Svendsen). Increasing number of “social placebos”, flashing and sparkling substitutes for a personal meaning, in turn reveals also increasing number of meanings needed to be covered. Discourse of media offers an insight into over-stimulation to which we are continuously exposed facing us with an interesting question: how is it possible that in a media overloaded society we can experience boredom more then ever before? Drawing from the work of philosophers, sociologists and media theoreticians, this paper offers a panoramic overview of that well-known state of mind which is continuously struggling with the worst condemption on one side, and the highest appraisal on the other. Does our modern way of living punish us with boredom, or is it a desired state which could offer greater insights into human nature and contribute to our culture? Main part of this paper is focused on this ambiguity with undeniable underlining certainty: boredom is here because we are worth it.
