Anthracnose stalk rot (ASR) caused by the fungus Colletotrichum graminicola (Ces.) G.W. Wils. has become one of the predominant stalk rot diseases of maize worldwide. In Croatia, maize anthracnose is an important disease, especially in the western, humid areas. This investigation was aimed at analyzing how successful the program of breeding for resistance to stalk anthracnose was with domestic line Bc19064 used as source of resistance. Three original lines and 16 newly developed lines were compared for resistance. The resistance of susceptible lines Bc14, Bc14478 and Bc473E-5 was significantly improved. Hybrid combinations with newly developed lines were tested in four yield trials at two, three and four locations in 2005, 2006, and 2008, respectively. Yield for hybrids with newly developed lines were significantly higher or at the level of standard hybrid. These results proved the effectiveness of breeding for resistance to stalk anthracnose. Application of artificial inoculation technique can be recommended in breeding process and the domestic line Bc19064 as a source of resistance.
