Sažetak
A smallish song book (canzoniere), left in a manuscript by Dominik Zlatarić, the third generation Croatian Petrarchan poet, belongs to the most highly refined Petrarchan poetry of older Croatian literature. Zlatarić’s poetry spans the whole gamut of human emotions, amorous relations, female portraits and moods, and shapes it all by means of all the available inventory of the poetry schools conventions, avoiding at the same time any use of worn-out epithets, colloquialisms and banality of the vernacular phraseology. As an ideological follower of orthodox Petrarchism, Zlatarić wrote a rather small number of poems with only traces of a carnal love experience. Since Zlatarić formulated his amorous experience utilizing a poetic diction which echoes the conventions of the canzoniere forms of the age, the traces of privacy remained hidden in his poetry that should have revealed the true identity of a lady the Renaissance Dubrovnik had longed for. Even his most intimate lines eschew any information regarding his own self. All the relations referring to human privacy are treated in his poems in accordance with the conventions of the genre, the prose inscriptions mirroring the conventios of the civic culture (therefore being abundant in respect and admiration) and verse forms remaining subject to Petrarchan norms. The worldview of Zlatarić’s canzoniere clearly reflects the philosophical preoccupations of the early modern period with the then prevalence of the themes concerned with love and beauty. His canzoniere bears witness to the inclusion of our cultural achievements into processes that had affected European cultural and contemplative matrix of the age. He might have been acquainted with the works of all those famous thinkers like M. Ficino, L. B. Alberti, L. Valla, B. Castiglione, A. Nifo, P. della Mirandola due to his own fellow-townsmen thinkers who had been preoccupied with the same philosophical ideas referring thus to the works of their European contemporaries. It is well known that in the second half of the 16th century it was not only Nikola Vitov Gučetić (Dialogo della belleza, Dialogo dell’amore) who was famous for his philosophical treatises on love, beauty and art. At least Miho Monaldi with his Irene ossia della belleza can be added to the list. Considering the metrical component of Zlatarić’s poetry, it could be stated that it is quite in accordance with his style, worldview as well as with the thematical preoccupations of his poems. The masterly used doubly-rhymed twelve-syllable verse higly contributes to a perfect combination of the elegance of classical Petrarchism and a refined style of Zlatarić’s poetry.
