Sažetak
A variety of methods were used in the past to identify human remains. During the last two decades, different methods of forensic DNA testing have been widely established and accepted as the standard procedure for this purpose. Data obtained through this analysis are highly reliable and can be used as a very powerful tool that produces valuable results. The identification of human remains found in mass graves always employs different methods: identification by a living person who knew the decedent, fingerprint analysis, dentition analysis, identification of special features, recognition of clothing and belongings, autopsy findings, the analysis by forensic anthropologists to estimate the species of the remains, sex, age, race, reconstruction of facial features from skulls, hair comparisons and DNA analysis. Since 60 years long time period from the end of the WWII, DNA analysis became almost the only solution in identification of victims' remains from that time. During the 2007, international scientific team was working on the challenging topic: DNA identification of the skeletal remains from the two WWII mass graves from Slovenia, Škofja Loka region. The remains of 27 individuals were found in two small and closely located mass graves. Initially, PowerPlex 16 kit was used for obtaining this goal. Out of all processed samples, 15 remains were fully profiled at all 15 STR loci. The other 12 profiles were partial. Comparison of victims’ profile against referent samples database (69 individuals) resulted in 4 strong matches. In addition, 5 other profiles were matched to certain referent samples with lower probability. Additional analysis of Y-STRs markers was performed in the second phase of the project. All lab-procedures were optimized for the 60 years old skeletal remains samples. Using this method, some of previously obtained lower matchings were confirmed and some of them were rejected.
