Sažetak
BACKGROUND: Exposure to allergens is the essential risk factor for the development of allergic sensitization, and the exposure of a sensitized person to allergens causes exacerbations of asthma or a persistence of asthmatic symptoms. Skin tests and measurements of specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) are essential tools in asthma diagnostics. OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation of the skin prick test with the level of IgE for inhalatory allergens in children having confirmed asthma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 377 chidren 3 to 5 years of age with confirmed astma attending the Children's Allergology Service of the Slavonski Brod General Hospital have been tested. There were 240 boys (63.7 %) and 137 girls (36, 3 %). GINA guidelines for the diagnosis were observed. Out of 377 children, 248 (65.8 %) have had allergic asthma (165 boys and 83 girls – 66, 5 % and 33.5 % respectively) and 129 children (34.2 %) have had non-allergic asthma (75 boys and 54 girls – 58.1 % and 41.9 % respectively. All children skin prick tested and have had thir IgE measured for the standard set of inhalatory allergens (house dust, grass pollen, house mites, and the weeds pollen). RESULTS: 249 children (66.0 %) have had a positive skin test to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and 211 (84.7 %) have had specific IgE for that allergen, with a significant correlation (r=0, 5000, df=246, p< 0, 001). A positive skin test for the house mites was found in 268 children (71.1 %), and 66 (24.6 %) have also had positive specific IgE. The correlation was positive although weak (r=0, 043, df=122, p<0, 05). 132 children (35.0 %) have had a positive skin test to grass pollen and 52 (39.4 %) have also had positive specific IgE, the correlation coefficient being weak ly positive (r=0, 358, df=132, p<0, 01). Out of 123 children who have had a positive skin test to the weeds pollen, 43 (34.9 %) have also had specific IgE. The correlation coefficient reveals is also weakly positive (r=0, 436, df=122, p<0, 01) CONCLUSION: Significant although weakly positive correlations were found between positive skin test and specific IgE for the inhalatory allergens of house dust, grass pollen and weeds pollen. A strong corellation was proven for the allergens of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus.
