Sažetak
The purpose of this study was to investigate the bone status in women population by use of quantitative ultrasound (QUS). Subject and methods: 500 randomly chosen domestic women from the Rijeka region participated in this study. Personal and antropometric data (age, menstrual status, height, weight, BMI) were noted for each person. Quantitative ultrasound was applied on the right heel of each person and primary parameters as well as estimated BMD were quantified and expressed as follows: eBMD g/cm2, BUA (dB/MHz), SOS (m/s) and QUI. According to the menstrual status women were divided into three different groups: 1. fertile women, 2. 5 years in menopause women, 3. more than 5 years in menopause women. Data were statisticaly analysed by use of breakdown one-way ANOVA (Statistica 7.1, StatSoft, Tulsa, USA). Results: The mean age of the examined women population was 53.6 (±10.6) years. Their BMI values amounted 26kg/m2 (±4.677). We found that all primary ultrasound parameters, including eBMD significantly differed dependently on women hormonal status. Accordingly, fertile woman and woman who are 5 years in menopause had significantly higher values of BUA, SOS, QUI, eBMD than woman who are more than 5 years in menopause (P<0.01). The% respectively. highest percentage of osteopenia and osteoporosis was found in those 5 years in menopause women: 16% and 21%, respectively. Surprisingly, higher percent of osteopenia was found in fertile women compared to 5 years in menopause women: 12% and 9%, respectively. Conclusion: The high percentage of osteopenia in healty fertile women suggests that these women could develop osteoporosis by incoming menopause. Therefore, urgent health care measures that include: education, sun exposure, exercise and helaty nutrition should be taken toeards these women to prevent further loss of the bone tissue.
