Sažetak
Recently a lot of efforts have been invested in the introduction of vehicles, including railway vehicles, using hybrid propulsion. Hybrid propulsion of railway vehicles represents an advanced propulsion solution with the basic aim of reducing fuel consumption and harmful emissions. The designed solutions of such propulsion indicate success in achieving the set goals. For successful implementation of such a solution special significance is on energy storage tanks. This paper considers the possible designs and characteristics of energy storage tanks for hybrid propulsion of railway vehicles. The focus is on electric energy tanks since this form of energy is used as energy conversion medium in the diesel-electric vehicles and the energy stored in this form is the most suitable to be used for traction. Also, during braking the kinetic energy of the vehicle can be easily converted into electrical energy which has to be stored so that it could be reused when necessary. The requirements for electrical energy tanks on railway vehicles are very high since they have to provide the possibility of charging and discharging large volumes of energy during short intervals in numerous cycles and regimes of partial charging and discharging. The paper analyzes the possible battery designs suitable for such application and their advantages and drawbacks. It also considers the capacitors and their characteristics regarding the storage of electricity and the flywheel as a device for storing kinetic energy.
