Sažetak
In frame-wall systems with competent and uniformly distributed walls, the infill walls stiffen the frame and reduce the first-mode period leading to a reduction in drift response to strong ground motion. At the same time, the addition of the masonry wall to the frame tends to increase the base-shear response and reduce the drift capacity of the structure. The increase of lateral force and reduction of drift capacity leads to serious vulnerabilities unless proper proportioning is exercised. For frames with competent walls, the challenge for safe and economical design is to be able to take advantage of the stiffening but to make certain that the increase in lateral forces and reduction in drift capacity do not handicap performance. Available field and laboratory evidence points to the shear strength of the confining RC column as the "Achiless's Heel" of the frame-wall system. Solution of the problem requires understanding the behavior of masonry and concrete subjected to dynamic and random loading reversals, a challenge that demands full-scale testing under reasonably realistic conditions for confident analysis of the problem and its generalization. This is a proposal to investigate the safety and behavior of buildings with masonry-infilled RC frames through full-scale dynamic earthquake-simulation tests accompanied by supporting pseudo-dynamic tests of structural assemblies and components . The overall goal is to develop pragmatic methods for evaluating the safety of existing buildings and for design of new buildings. Because frame-wall systems serve both architectural and structural demands efficiently, people in seismic regions live and will continue to live in buildings of this type. An organized solution of the safety of such construction is essential. Phase 1 of the project includes two full-scale buildings proposed for earthquake-simulation tests at EUCENTRE, Italy, [or AZALEE, France]. The focus of these tests will be primarily on shear strength of the columns. Effect of wall openings and out-of-plane stability of the walls will also be investigated. The tests will also serve as a platform for development of new sensors for remote sensing of structural safety. Phase 2 will focus on pseudo-dynamic component tests to expand the domain of applicability of the information from Phase 1. The elements of the Phase 2. are already known from the previous and synergetic projects. Phase 3 will be a cooperative effort by the partnership to develop consensus procedures for safety evaluation and design. This phase of the project will be vetted by an advisory group with representation from the SERIES project team.
