Sažetak
Premixes for medicated feedingstuffs are considered as veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) prepared in advance with a view to the subsequent manufacture of medicated feedingstuffs. Medicated feedstuffs should be prepared only from marketing authorized premixes and premixes for medicated feedstuffs can be used only as prescribed medicines. Apart from the active substance, premixes contain carriers which have a role in the homogenization of medicated feedstuffs. Wheat bran as a carrier may be a source of different potentially harmful or toxic substances e.g. aflatoxin. In our study 15 different batches of premixes with wheat bran component were tested on aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Tested samples showed contamination with AFB1 ranging from 1.5 to 35 ng/g (mean=18.79 ng/g). However, no correlation of AFB1 levels with the month of the collection or season of production was observed. Considering the composition of the premix, only possible source of contamination of AFB1 were wheat bran. Contamination likely occurred before the production of premix, probably in fields or during the storage of wheat bran. Concentration of active substances as well ac citric acid (neutralising agent for mycotoxins) were in accordance with producer’s declaration. Our findings of AFB1 in the tested premixes are in contrary with the definition and primary role of veterinary medicinal products. In this study we would like to highlight the absence of control of starting materials of biological origin for premixes production. Even though carriers are not pharmacologically active substances, an efficient control of eventual contaminants, such as mycotoxins or their toxic components should be proposed with the aim to protect animal health, consumers, users and workers in the production of veterinary medicinal products.
