Sažetak
Bone regeneration is a process of vital importance since factures of long bones and large joints have a highly deleterious impact on life of individual and society. Various attempts are done to solve this severe medical and social problem by development of novel bioactive materials, among which bioactive glass is the most attractive because of its osteoconductive and osteostimulative properties. Since lipid peroxidation was defined as important parameter of systematic stress response in patients with traumatic brain injuries and bone fractures it led to recent studies of molecular mechanisms of 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), end product of lipid peroxidation, associated with cellular growth regulation. We have found that HNE is generating in bone cells while grown in vitro on the surfaces of bioactive glasses 45S5 and 13-93. This raises interesting hypothesis of combined action of HNE and bioglass ionic dissolution products in enhanced osteogenesis probably through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. While proposed mechanism still has to be elucidated, the finding of HNE generated on bioglass offers new interpretation of osteoinducting mechanisms of bioglass and suggests promising tools in future tissue engineering based on oxidative homeostasis.
