Sažetak
The author wants to present the music of Istrian towns and villages, especially those pertaining to Pula, Poreč and its neighboring boroughs. Three major ethnic groups lived in Istria in that period: Germans, Croats and Italians. Each group cherished its own culture, and they were all linked to specific institutions and habits of companionship. At the end of the 19th century, cultural and musical activities closely followed both political and economic events. Urban centres have been characterised by elegant musical events, while rural areas have fostered folkloric heritage. Istrian melographer Ivan Matetić-Ronjgov (1880-1960) identified the genuine musical expression and untempered singing of Istrian folk. In order to record and study Istrian folk music, he conceived a system of Istrian series. However, the question is whether the Istrian musical scale is just a composing method or part of immaterial cultural heritage like the songs from which it developed, considering that Istrian music is still being disseminated by present-day composers.
