Sažetak
Recent studies confirmed the association between depression and cognitive decline in old age. Our previous pilot study results have indicated that cognitive function and depression are determined by two distinct factors, but the prediction of cognitive function is to a certain degree determined by depression. The aim of this study was to determine mediating psychosocial factors in association between depression and cognitive impairment in old institutionalized people. Subjects were 561 residents of 11 older people’s homes, 160 men and 401 women, aged 56-96 years (average 79 years). Zung Depression Scale and Clifton Cognitive Function Scale were administered. Subjects’ objective health status, self-perceived health, social support, social participation and functional ability were controlled for. Significant predictors of cognitive function are social participation, functional ability, age and depression. Their mediating role is different in different test models. The nature of this association could reveal risk factors for MCI or impending AD.
