Sažetak
Packaging is an integral part of industrially packaged goods. An ecological compatibility of used and thrown packaging has been intensively analysed in the send half of the XX cen-tury. It was then established that packaging has an influence on the environment even before it is used for different items packaging, thus criteria on ecological balance assessment are introduced. As the packaging is involved in the whole life circle an ISO series 14000 – Environmental Management Systems, ISO Guide 64, are applied on packaging as well. In this case an empty packaging presents an input, while packaging with the content is considered as output in the whole life cycle assessment. This means that packaging life circle starts be-fore the goods are being packaged and ends by empting the packages. The effect on the environment could be observed in two ways. In the first case, in the case of food packaging, the effect of packaging can be observed individually i.e. without product influence. In the second case, if a packaged product is characterised by its hazardous properties, then the packaging is also treated as hazardous waste and is prone to adequate treatment procedure. So the main task of environmental management is defined by the strategy of sustainable development and the need of preventive action in the whole life circle, instead of curing the consequences of accidental situations. This is extremely important for packaging containing hazardous products.
