Sažetak
Dissertation investigates the influence that a regime type has on economic and social development. Statistical investigation showed that, in the 1830-1950 period, democracies were much more successful than dictatorships in promoting economic growth. However, in the last fifty years, dictatorships achieved results that were equivalent to democracies in the promotion of GDP per capita growth and educational level. In addition, during the 1950-2001 period, dictatorships were more successful in promoting GDP growth and increasing life expectancy. Furthermore, among regime subtypes, communist dictatorship was the most successful in advancing economic and social development. Dissertation argues that the main factor that caused this success was the strong role of the state in promoting development. Dissertation also identifies the main factors that caused the collapse of the communist regime in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Two of the primary factors were the imbalance between military expenditure and individual consumption and the malfunction of the market during the period of communism.
