Sažetak
The French engineer Charles Coulomb (1736-1806) has left deep footprints in the field of geotechnical engineering. It is widely accepted that Coulomb was the first practitioner applying the principles of mechanics on solving problems in the area which today are classified as soil mechanics. Some of his engineering activities were accomplished for the military. In order to protect some old army forts from being destroyed by cannon fire, he decided to apply the concept of protection of outer walls with the aid of filling in the flank walls with earth materials (Figs. 1a and 1b). While striving to ascertain the amount of side load the constructed embankment has on the existing fort wall, Coulomb came upon the concept of critical wedge geometry and its maximum (active) load. This valuable find is still being used in engineering today, sometimes with an unwelcome interpretation, especially with anchored walls, so that such solutions assume the characteristics of the so-called Coulomb's unintentional risk. In short, in those cases the risk is not deliberate, but it does exist.
