Sažetak
OBJECTIVES: Study examines high school graduates' knowledge and attitudes towards sexually transmitted diseases. METHOD: High school graduates from three different high schools completed a simple questionnaire about sexually transmitted diseases (STD). The high schools included were a nursing secondary school, a general education high school, and a technical secondary school. The questionnaire consisted of nine true-false questions. The goal of the study was to examine students’ level of knowledge about STDs and to find out if there is any difference in knowledge among the three high schools. RESULTS: Out of 280 participants, 66 were nursing school students, 129 general education school students, and 85 technical school students. As it was expected, the level of knowledge was very high in all three high schools. The percentage of true answers was between 81.82%-95.45% in nursing school, 79.07%-100% in general education school, and 68.24%-98.82% in technical school for most of the questions. The most commonly missed question among all participants was the one regarding condom use: «Condoms protect me of all sexually transmitted diseases». Only 25.76% students in nursing school, 69.77% students in general education school, and 60% students in technical school answered correctly. CONCLUSION: The study showed that the current generation of high school graduates has a very good general knowledge about STDs. However, there are still certain issues they need to be educated about, e.g., condom-use and their role in STD-prevention.
