Sažetak
Sensation is, according to the Online survey of media editors and journalists (European commission, 2007), one of the preferable news values for the media science stories. Hype, which is often used in the science reporting, turns sensation into sensationalism. Croatian media are very responsive to the agendas created by sources of the scientific information and often more reactive than active in gathering the information about science. The process of creating the story is sometimes dominated by hype and excessive use of sensationalism, in which the text does not offer the proofs for the statements or promises from the headlines and layout and certain facts are intentionally overlooked in order to create the intended message. This short analysis suggests that the sensationalism in the coverage of science is created within the dynamic interaction of media professionals, PR officers and scientists in which scientists in certain circumstances take an active role. Also, science community feeds media sensationalism through PR ; it’s carefully selected information and ready to publish messages. The media practice of accepting rather than investigating the facts together with the overall tendency to exaggerate creates sensationalist coverage of science. This will be illustrated by few examples from the Croatian media.
