Sažetak
Chlamydiosis is a zoonosis caused by intracellular bacteria Chlamydophila psittaci (C. psittaci), which represents a significant problem in veterinary and humane medicine all over the world. Numerous wild and domesticated bird species fall ill, and the diagnostics, compared to many other bacterial illnesses, is very complex and dangerous for laboratory personnel. In the Republic of Croatia, prevention and the illness control is carried out according to the law provisions. The national laboratory for the diagnosis of Chlamydia was established in 2006. During the 2007 and 2008 samples have been collected from various species of wild and domesticated fowl. In order to confirm the infection of birds by Chlamydia, samples (droppings, the swap of conjunctiva, pharynx and cloaca, the organs of perished birds) were examined by means of different diagnostic procedures ; the methods applied were ELISA, Clearview test, conventional PCR and Real Time PCR. Of the totally 1789 examined samples, 232 (12.9 %) were positive. Positive samples has been detected from a wide range of avian species, but especially positive turkey and laying hens flocks suggested that further investigations are needed in attempt to detect the role of Chlamydia in clinically respiratory syndrome. Depending on the flock size and housing conditions, positive birds were treated therapeutically with different antimicrobial agents (tetracycline or enrofloxacine) and bio-security measures (quarantine, regular cleaning and disinfection) were performed in all positive cases. After the treatment, the birds were examined until negative results were obtained. Not only the number of the birds positive for chlamydiosis but also the data on the people fallen ill with psittacosis during the period from 1997 through 2008 showed that this infection is not only a problem of veterinary service, but also a public health service problem.
