Sažetak
This study presents the current status of human leptospirosis in Croatia through the epidemiological and clinical point of view. Data from Annual reports of Croatian Institute for Public Health (CIPH), and archive of the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases « ; Dr. Fran Mihaljevic» ; in Zagreb (UHID), were used in this retrospective cohort analysis. Mean yearly incidence of leptospirosis from 1990-2007 was 1.83/100 000 inhabitants with incidence greater than 2.5 recorded approximately every 3-4 years, presenting Croatia as one of the country with highest incidence of human leptospirosis in Europe. Beside majority of sporadic cases two minor outbreaks were recorded. Clinical burden and more detailed epidemiology of 130 patients hospitalized at the UHID in period from 1997-2007 were also studied. Clinical presentations were within expected with overall case fatality rate of 0.77%.The most commonly established infective serovars were Australis followed by Saxkoebing and Grippotyphosa. In comparison to previous periods the mean yearly number of the patients with leptospirosis hospitalized at the UHID decreased, but among them rather higher rate of the patients with Weil's disease and higher case fatality rate was observed.
