Sažetak
Aim. To determine the impact of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) to the self-percieved oral health related quality of life and to compare the oral-Health-Related-Quality-of-Life (OHRQoL) with a control group. Participants. Eighty one consecutive Slovenian TMD patients participated as a study group and another 400 adults from the regional population sample served as controls. Methods. The mean OHIP-SVN summary scores were computed for all the patients with the same diagnosis and the same subgroup of the axis I according to the RDC/TMD exam form. The mean OHIP-SVN subscores for the seven domains of the OHIP-SVN questionnaire were compared between the study and the control group, too. Hierarchic linear regression model was used for the OHIP-SVN summary score to asess the most important variables according to the RDC/TMD protocol that contribute to reduced OHRQoL. Results. 1. TMD’ s are highly associated with reduced OHRQoL (p<0.001). 2. More diagnoses of the axis I according to the RDC/TMD protocol resulted in the more impaired OHRQoL (p<0.001). 3. Higher age of the patient group was associated with the more impaired OHRQoL (p<0.001). 4. Diagnoses associated with the limited jaw movements (Diagnoses Ib and IIb) contributed to a worse OHRQoL (p=0.008 and p=0.030, respectively). 5. Female TMD patients have no significantly different quality of life compared with male patients (p=0.436). 6. In regression analysis higher age (p<0.001), more diagnoses identified in the context of TMD’ s (p<0.018) and miofascial pain with limited jaw movements (Diagnose Ib according to the RDC/TMD protocol) (p=0, 169) explained 39, 1% variability (p<0, 001) of the OHIP-SVN summary score. Conclusion. TMD patients have significantly reduced OHRQoL compared to the general population. The OHIP-SVN questionnaire is an effective instrument for determining the impact of TMD to the self-percieved oral health related quality of life.
