Sažetak
The aim was to compare the alveolar bone density obtained from intraoral retroalveolar digital radiographs of FPD abutments and homologous teeth. Material and Methods The bone density data were expressed as equivalents of 8 layers (0, 05-0, 7mm) Cu stepwedge thicknes, directly calculated from mean grey levels of regions of interest (ROIs) using the third order polinomial. A total of 69 patients having 130 abutment teeth participated. Mean age of FPDs was 5 years and clinical examination revealed that the FPDs were mostly satisfactory. A copper stepwedge was attached to the digital x-ray sensor. The results showed that the alveolar bone density became higher from the alveolar crest towards the apex of both, the FPD abutments and the homologous teeth (p<0.01). The alveolar bone showed significantly higher density distally than mesially at the alveolar crest level in both FDP abutments and homologous teeth (p<0.01). Men had significantly denser bone than women at the level of the middle of the root and the level of the apex (p<0.05). Although the average density of homologous teeth was slightly higher than of abutments there was no statistical significance between them (p>0.05). No significant effect of age, jaw, FPD material, body mass index, interdental space width, type of abutment (single crown or bridge), abutment/pontic ratio, and Ante’ s law was registered (p>0.05). Conclusion Messially lower bone density at the level of alveolar crest in FPD abutments should not be considered as pathological findings.
