Sažetak
PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of gender, age and Eichner clasification on the degree of the posterior mandibular residual ridge resorption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Proportional area measurements of the posterior mandible were made on 204 panoramic radiographs using ISSA software. The method demarcates two areas of the radiograph ; one defined by the crest of the residual alveolar ridge and the other independent of the alveolar ridge. The proportional value (Posterior Area Index) was expressed as a proportion of an area dependent of the alveolar ridge and the one that is not. The use of proportions rather than actual measurements minimized errors related to magnification and distortion. RESULTS: The method of posterior indices showed that the posterior edentulous mandible resorption was signifficantly affected only by the loss of posterior teeth (molars, molars and premolars): 25.6% for the left side and 22.6% for the right side (p<0.01). No significant effects of gender, age and Eichner clasification were observed (p>0.05). However the effect of age (right side-2, 3% and left side 1, 6% ; p>0, 05), Eichner clasification (right side-1, 7% and left side 4% ; p>0, 05) and gender changed the dependent variable only 4% (right side) and 5.6% (left side). CONCLUSION: Female gender was not a risk factor for posterior mandibular ridge resorption. Age and Eichner clasification failed to show an association with resorption of the residual posterior mandibular ridge. It depended only on the presence of posterior teeth.
